“Her sacking today should be welcomed by all who reject her divisive politics. It is she who has promoted hate, not the peaceful Palestine marchers.”

Suella Braverman’s sacking as Home Secretary is a direct result of her attempt to ban the Ceasefire Now march for Palestine, organisers say.

Her characterisation of Saturdays huge demonstration in central London calling for an immediate ceasefire it as a “hate march” was a lie, the Stop the War Coalition (StWC) said.

Lindsey German, StWC convenor said: “Describing a march that was joined by up to a million people, many of them families with young children, as about hate was an outrageous slur, while her attempt to whip up division led to fascists and far-right fighting round the Cenotaph on Armistice Day, just as we warned it would.

“Her sacking today should be welcomed by all who reject her divisive politics. It is she who has promoted hate, not the peaceful Palestine marchers. Our march demanded an immediate ceasefire in Israel and Gaza, which the Liberal Democrats have also now done. Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak must now follow suit.

“The daily bombardment of Gaza continues in what is a brutal exercise in targeting civilians and ethnic cleansing. Tanks surrounding a hospital can never be justified. Nor can the killing of thousands of children.

“Rather than listen to our message, the government is considering trying to make it easier to ban our marches. We will not accept this. We will be protesting again on Wednesday when Parliament debates the ceasefire. And we will continue our marches in solidarity with the Palestinians for as long as it takes.”

StWC also warned that the appointment of David Cameron as foreign secretary means there is “zero chance” of peace in the Middle East.

“David Cameron’s foreign policy legacy is one of death, destruction and misery in Libya and Syria. There’s zero chance of him bringing any peace to the Middle East, just more war and misery,” Lindsey German commented.
