Official statement by Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII) regarding Prof. Abbas Edalat’s detention in Iran
CASMII is aware of the detention of Professor Abbas Edalat in Iran on 15th April. In conversations with his family, we have heard he is in good spirits and has been treated well. His family members met with him on the 25th of April and he has clearly indicated he does not wish for his detention to be a matter of media inquiries and that he is confident in the legal process. We understand he has not been charged with any crimes and we believe his arrest is the result of a misunderstanding.
Reports first published by the Centre for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) have not been provided by his family and are not verified.
Professor Abbas Edalat is a distinguished academic with several ground-breaking multidisciplinary research interests. His record in campaigning against sanctions and war on Iran is public knowledge. Since 2005 when pro-war lobbies were drawing up plans of military attack and sanctions against Iran, CASMII under Prof. Edalat’s leadership has campaigned against the West’s illegal interventions and has worked tirelessly for the Iranian people’s right of self determination.
We are appalled to see that the unfortunate detention of Prof. Edalat, a distinguished anti-war campaigner, is being used by warmongers and pro-sanctions groups to target Iran in another round of hostilities towards the country.
CASMII will continue to follow this situation closely and will provide further updates as they become available.
